Hand Carved Wooden Buddha Statue in Earth Touching MudraGautamaBuddha was born in 563 B.C. in northeast India. The Buddha was theson of the King of the Shakyas. Suddhodana, who ruled atKapilavastu, on the border of Nepal. His mother was Queen Maya. Hewas named Siddartha. He lived amidst the pleasures of palace lifeand at age 16 he was married to Princess Yasodhara. They had a sonnamed Rahula. After seeing a decrepit old man, an invalid, and anascetic beggar, he learned of suffering and decided to embraceasceticism. Soon afterward, at age 29, Siddhartha left the palaceand his family and went to a hermitage where he became monkGuatama, or, as he is still called, Shakyamuni (The ascetic of theShakyas). One day, meditating under a sacred fig tree, he attainedperfect illumination (Bodhi). He had become a Buddha. From there onhe traveled and preached for 44 years what was to become one of themain religions of the world. He died at Kusinagara at age 80. HereBuddha is depicted in the Earth. As the Buddha drew near to hisenlightenment experience, he was assailed by the forces oftemptation (Mara). He remained steadfast, however, and reached downto call upon the Earth to witness his vow to be unmoved by anytemptation. Thus, it is a gesture of determination, reflecting theimmovable, unshakable aspect of meditation.
